Frequently Asked Questions

What is this art, visual essay thing? What is Addendum?

Addendum is a series of visual essays curated by the Kadist Art Foundation. The essays are created by artists using images from archives they’re researching.

How do I learn more about the art?

A wonderful question. Check out Addendum.

Why does the image look cropped?

If the image doesn’t fit into a standard advertising banner size, it is cropped automatically by Add-Art. You’ll see a variety of details or whole images, depending on the page and ad size.

Why am I seeing some ads?

Add-Art works well, but it’s not perfect because of the disturbingly complex ways ads are delivered (through iframes, delayed loading, scripts, and more). You can contribute code and help improve this. You don’t have to see these ads. Add-Art works with other blockers like AdBlock Plus and ublock as well as privacy plugins like Ghostery and AdNauseam,

Can I make a visual essay?

Yes. Once your images are online, you can fill out this form. You’ll receive a unique url for your show. Open the Addendum/Add-Art interface and hit the + symbol next to the word “ESSAYS”. Paste in your unique URL, and hit the + at the right side of the text field to submit it. Your show will be added to the interface. Share your Add-Art URL with with friends and they’ll see your show too!

Will this slow down my browsing at all?

Not really. The images should be cached locally once you download them all.

Foolish Questions

Don’t you realize this will bring the end of online advertising, the free internet, destroy the newspaper industry, violates some arcane “terms of use” agreement, and/or will bring more invasive advertising?

Oh stop, you flatter us! Seriously, here’s some things to consider:
  1. You downloaded the page, and you own it. It’s yours and you can do whatever you want to it. Just like if you get a free newspaper, you can read it, or cut it up, or burn it. It’s your life and you have no legal obligation to look at every ad presented to you.
  2. People that use Ad Blocking software are not people that click on ads or even respond favorably to them. There is no loss in the market when these users block ads.
  3. If we extend the logic of Ad Blockers destroying the free internet then online ad blocking pales in comparison to the number of people destroying the television industry by going to the bathroom during commercial breaks, thereby stealing that content from the television companies. Don’t waste your time with us and go complain to them.

Aren’t you just replacing one ad with a different kind of ad?

Believing so also means believing that art and advertising are fundamentally the same. We strongly disagree.

I don’t like the art!

Fascinating! Add-Art’s goal is not to replace ads with decoration or wallpaper that everyone finds comfortable or pleasing. You might like the idea of seeing art, but not like all the art you see. That’s ok. That’s how art is. If you don’t like the art, make your own.
